Ignition Interlock Device
In the event of a DUI/DWI conviction, you may be required by the court to install an Ignition Interlock Device in your vehicle
- This generally consists of a hand held breathalyzer unit tethered to a monitoring device attached to your dashboard
- Should the device detect alcohol when used, the motor will be disabled
- It is important to note that the device will randomly signal the driver to blow into the hand held unit while the vehicle is in operation
- This is to prevent an impaired driver from using the breath of a sober person to enable the vehicle in order to thwart the system
- Some devices also include a small camera built into the dashboard unit to prevent such trickery. This invasive and persistent monitoring is becoming more frequent as the technology improves
- In almost all cases, you will be required to pay for the cost of the device and subsequent monitoring
A FORMER PROSECUTOR has valuable experience gained from having been on the other side of the table. This knowledge will give you the best possible chance to avoid having the burden of this device placed on you
